Bio

Ana is a Brazilian performing artist, choreographer, and instructor currently based in Washington DC.

She is the Dance Captain of NYC-based company Music From the Sole, a tap dance and live music company referred to as “an unforced crowd-pleaser, original and true to itself” by The New York Times, directed by Leonardo Sandoval and Gregory Richardson. Ana is also a member of SOLE Defined, a percussive dance company directed by Ryan and Quynn Johnson based in DC, and has performed at prestigious venues and festivals around the US and abroad including The Lincoln Center, The Kennedy Center, The New York City Center, The Yard, Jacob’s Pillow Dance Festival, São Paulo Municipal Theater, and Rock in Rio. 

Ana works as a choreographer and instructor in the DC area offering online and in person sessions.

Music From The Sole at Rowan University

Glassboro, NJ

Tap, percussive dance, samba, house, and live music come together in I DIDN'T COME TO STAY, in which Brazilian tap dancer/choreographer Leonardo Sandoval and bassist/composer Gregory Richardson lead eight dancers and a five-piece band in a performance that explores tap's lineage and connections to other Afrodiasporic forms. Together the pair embrace shared roots across the diaspora and reflect on racial and cultural identity, while also celebrating the joy, strength, depth, and virtuosity of Black dance and music.

Dancing with Glass: The Piano Etudes

New York City, NY - The Joyce Theater

Over the course of his illustrious career, renowned composer Philip Glass conceived The Etudes as a set of solo piano works to expand his piano technique. Now amongst Glass’s most popular works, The Etudes have inspired performances and interpretations from artists worldwide. In Dancing with Glass: The Piano Etudes, five new choreographic perspectives on The Etudes will be presented alongside a performance by guest pianist Maki Namekawa, one of the world’s foremost interpreters of Glass’s music. The evening will feature works by post-modern innovator Lucinda Childs, Chanon Judson of Urban Bush Women, Justin Peck of New York City Ballet, Brazilian tap artist Leonardo Sandoval, and Los Angeles-based choreographers Bobbi Jene Smith and Or Schraiber.

Music From The Sole at Celebrity Series

Boston, MA

I Didn’t Come to Stay, a work for eight dancers and a five-piece band earned a spot on the New York Times’ Best Dance Performances of 2022 list. It explores tap’s connections to house, samba, Brazilian funk, and jazz. The artists embrace these forms’ shared roots across the diaspora and reflect on racial and cultural identity while celebrating the joy, strength, depth, and virtuosity of Black dance and music.

Music from the Sole will make their Boston debut with this performance.
